Holder of a master's degree in paleobotany, Elshafaey Abdelllatif joined the Tell el-Iswid site in order to extend his skills to the fields of anthracology and carpology. Its objective is also to provide, in a difficult context, for the maintenance of the disciplines of archaeobotany in Egypt, at the University of Helwan.

In 2016, he was awarded a grant as part of a call for projects for the training of young foreign doctoral students in advanced techniques in archeology, a project launched by the  Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEAE).
