Training

Since 2016, the Tell el-Iswid team has been welcoming two Egyptian trainees as part of the ongoing training offered by the IFAO to young inspectors and students in archeology. These young colleagues and future colleagues are integrated into the team from the excavation to the work of updating the documentation.

The team also welcomes students who have already graduated in certain specialties in order to help them develop innovative approaches in their field. This is the case of our collaborator Elshaffaey Abdellatif who trained with Aline Emery-Barbier in the study of phytoliths, a new discipline which is becoming essential for documenting the environment and the subsistence economy.

Interns in 2017

In 2017, the team supervised two IFAO training interns. Nahla Refaat and Heba Al Ders. Nahla and Heba are both on the Supreme Council of Egyptian Antiquities (CSA) , pursuing university studies in Cairo and Aswan. They participated for two weeks in the excavations of Tell el-Iswid. The first week was devoted to training in stratigraphy and recording methods at the site, as well as the treatment of the furniture at the excavation house. The second week, the trainees were given a square of excavation and took charge of part of the sorting of the furniture. Then they wrote their report. During these two weeks, each member of the team mobilized to present their specialty.

Nahla was particularly interested in the analysis of plant remains and the paleoenvironment. Heba was very insightful about the Harris method and stratigraphy.
